A month after Sri Lanka's civil war ended, tens of thousands of people are relying on humanitarian aid to survive. MRDF is working with the Methodist Church to provide vital support to some of those in need.

The 26-year conflict in Sri Lanka, Asia's longest modern war, has left over 70,000 dead and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes. Until recently, many civilians were trapped as government troops and Tamil Tigers fought in the final war zone in the northeast of the country. These people are now flooding into government camps, in desperate need of food, water and sanitation.

MRDF is supporting an appeal through the Methodist Church that will provide emergency assistance and counselling to those affected by the conflict. Donations will also help families to resettle in new homes and rebuild their lives.

Simeon Mitchell, MRDF's Fundraising Director, said: ‘Just as the country has started to recover from the devastation of the tsunami, the recent intensification of the conflict in Sri Lanka has devastated so many lives – hundreds of thousands of people are without homes or the means to make a living. Through this appeal, we have the opportunity to respond to a dire situation by meeting urgent and long-term needs.'
