Haiti update - three months on

Three months after the earthquake struck Haiti, people are still removing rubble in the capital, Port au Prince.

Three months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, funds raised by MRDF, now totalling nearly £380,000, are being used to provide food, shelter, sanitation, medical care and supplies to those affected by the disaster.

Many of the people we are supporting are from high-risk groups such as children, the elderly and the disabled. Although much of our emergency work is taking place in the capital of Port-au-Prince, we are also supporting relief and rebuilding efforts away from the epicentre of the earthquake, in areas where other charities are not working. Some of the funds raised by MRDF are being channelled through Action by Churches Together (ACT) International - a global alliance of churches and related agencies that support communities in emergencies worldwide. MRDF will also be supporting the rehabilitation projects of the Methodist Church of Haiti.

How has the money been spent?

Your donations have helped to provide regular meals, blankets, tents and tarpaulins in the aftermath of the earthquake. Thousands of children have received emergency food supplies of enriched milk, spinach, beans and rice. We have also been able to fund a water purification system in the Belair neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince, which is providing 10,000 homeless Haitians with crystal clear drinking water – the first clean water they have had since the earthquake struck in January. Your donations have also helped fund the construction of public toilet and shower blocks, wells and septic systems for controlling waste. This has helped to reduce the spread of diarrhoea and water-borne diseases such as typhoid and cholera. In addition to this, MRDF support has provided emergency medical care and counselling.

The focus is now shifting to more long term restorative work. Construction of new homes has already begun, and families are being provided with cows, goats, chickens and seeds to plant crops for the next harvest, thanks to your donations. Your generosity is helping thousands of people not only to survive, but to rebuild their lives.
